Fairtrade Chocolate
CBS Mornings recently did a segment on the child labor that is rampant in the $100+ Billion-dollar chocolate industry. Admittedly, I’ve known about this issue for years. It’s easy to put social injustices in the rear-view mirror when they are, literally and figuratively, worlds away. But the system won’t change unless our dollars direct it to. So, as conscious consumers, choosing Fairtrade chocolate is always the right choice.
What is Fairtrade? It’s just that: a global movement designed to create trade that is fair. Boiled down to the basics, companies that are Fairtrade certified are committed to standards of practice that protect against child labor, promote gender quality and eco-friendly farming practices, and offers farmers/growers/makers a fair market value for their goods.
